Sir Charles Lyell (1797–1875) was a prominent British geologist, born in Scotland, best known for his contributions to the understanding of geological processes and the development of modern geology.

The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man" is a significant work by Sir Charles Lyell, first published in 1863. In this book, Lyell aimed to provide a systematic examination of the geological evidence supporting the antiquity of human beings.

Lyell's "The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man" played a crucial role in shaping the discussion around human origins and the relationship between geology and archaeology. It laid the groundwork for future research into human prehistory and the understanding of our evolutionary past.

Lyell's work laid a geological foundation that complemented Darwin's ideas in "On the Origin of Species." While Darwin focused on biological evolution, Lyell provided the geological context necessary for understanding the time scales involved.

This is BOUND IN THE PUBLISHER’S ORIGINAL AND HANDSOME GREEN, TEXTURED CLOTH, OVER BOARDS, with embossed borders on the boards, gilt embossed illustrations on the front, and gilt lettering on the spine. THE COVER IS INTACT, ROBUST, AND IN A GOOD CONDITION FOR OVER 160 YEARS OLD. However, there is some age-related wear, expected from a book of this age. This includes bumping and small rips to the corners and the top and bottom of the spine, marks, patches of rubbing, light stains, and a little discolouration. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference.

Internally, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent for a book of this age. THE PAGES ARE IN AN OVERALL VERY NEAT, AND CLEAN STATE FOR THEIR AGE, AND ARE PREDOMINANTLY UNCREASED. There is just the very occasional very light foxing, other small or light marks, or creases. These do not obscure the text or illustrations. The pages are not uniform in their edging and roughly cut, but this is most likely to do with the construction method when this book was made and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. There are unopened pages (uncut leaves) between pages 413 to 416. Reference of this is shown in the photos. The unopened pages are also to do with the construction method of the book and the uncut pages have not been severed from their neighbours with the paper knife. To the edge of several pages there are small rips, mainly from being roughly cut, and there is a very small hole near the bottom edge of page 149 and overleaf. Please note that none of the rips/very small hole affect the text or illustrations. On the back pastedown there is a very small sticker for the book binders pasted. There are also some very light remnants of pencil on page 41 (see photo). However, there are no further pen or pencil marks written inside this book. Most of the pages are tightly bound and secure. However, the front free endpaper is loose within the book, and there are light cracks in the gutter between a few pages. There ARE NO MISSING PAGES, and so all 520 pages, plus 32 pages containing the publisher’s catalogue at the rear of the book.

PLEASE STUDY THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY AS TO THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK, AS THEY DO FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION.

This measures approximately 23 cm by 15 cm and 5.1 cm wide. It weighs approximately 1,078 grams.
