1889 – A NATURALIST’S VOYAGE by Charles DARWIN – Antiquarian Illustrated Hardback Book – A Journal Of  Researches Into The Natural History And Geology Of The Countries Visited During The Voyage Of H.M.S. ‘Beagle’  Round The World. Under The Command Of Capt. Fitzroy.

With a stunning frontispiece portrait of Charles Darwin and several small illustrations and diagrams throughout the book. There are also patterned pastedowns and endpapers.

This does not have a dust jacket.

Published by John Murray, Albemarle Street, London in 1889 and printed in Great Britain by William Clowes And Sons, Limited, Stamford Street and Charing Cross, London.

This is with the publisher’s original dark green blue cloth binding, over boards, and has an embossed gold gilt illustration on the front, which is just wonderful, and there is gilt lettering on the spine. The cover is intact, but there are patches of wear, bumping to the corners, loss of cloth and wear to the corners and edges, especially at the bottom, which continues along the lower edge, and marks/stains. Please see the photographs provided and please take into consideration that this book is nearly 140 years old.

Inside the book, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent with a book of this age. There is a stain at the bottom of the page edges (visible when the book is closed and on several pages), but besides this, the pages are in an overall neat and clean state, with just the very occasional other small mark. The majority of the pages are uncreased, with creases to just a few pages. Some of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. Several pages towards the start of the book have small rips at the bottom corners. Other than this there are just a few pages with very small rips at the edges. There is also a slight rubbing at the bottom of pages 232 and 233. None of these obscure the text. There are no pen or pencil marks inside this book. The majority of the pages are tightly bound; however, a couple of the front endpapers are loose within the book (please see the photo) and between a few pages are light cracks in the gutter. These are minimal. There are no missing pages and so all 519 pages are present, plus 4 pages containing book advertisements. Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.

This measures approximately 19.5 cm by 13.2 cm and 3.7 cm wide. It weighs approximately 646 grams.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English naturalist and biologist who is best known for his theory of evolution by natural selection. He was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, to a wealthy family. Darwin's father was a physician, and his grandfather was the famous physician and poet Erasmus Darwin. Darwin studied at the University of Edinburgh and later at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he developed a keen interest in natural history. After completing his studies, Darwin embarked on a five-year voyage aboard HMS Beagle as a naturalist. The expedition, which took place from 1831 to 1836, took him to various parts of the world, including South America, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, and the Cape Verde Islands. Darwin meticulously collected specimens and made detailed observations, which laid the foundation for his later work.
