Jerome's humorous account of an imagined boating holiday along the River Thames became an immediate bestseller and has remained continuously in print for well over a century. This copy represents a genuine 1889 first edition published by J. W. Arrowsmith of Bristol, retaining its original Thames-blue publisher's cloth binding with the distinctive black decorative panel to the front board and gilt lettering to the spine.
Importantly, bibliographical examination confirms this to be an early state of the first edition. It retains numerous recognised first-edition characteristics, including the omission of the building number "11" before Quay Street on the title page, the original publisher's binding, A. Frederics' illustrations, and the correct sequence of publisher's advertisements. Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859-1927) was one of Britain's most celebrated humourists and novelists. Binding & Exterior
Bound in the original Thames-blue cloth over boards with gilt lettering to the spine and the characteristic black decorative panel to the front board.
The binding remains robust and attractive with honest age-related cosmetic wear, including several light marks, light discolouration, gentle rubbing to the extremities, softly bumped corners, a couple of light creases to the front board and fading to the spine. Despite this, it retains excellent shelf presence and remains an increasingly desirable example of the original publisher's binding.
 
Interior Condition
The pages remain remarkably bright for their age with only very light natural toning. Aside from occasional very small marks and a handful of light creases, the text pages are notably clean. There are a few extremely small edge or inner margin tears which do not affect either text or illustrations.
There are no ownership inscriptions or annotations.
The binding remains secure throughout. There are a few extremely light gutter openings typical of Victorian books, while the half-title to page 2 have become partially detached from the inner binding, only at the very bottom edge. The pages themselves remain entirely secure.
All 315 numbered pages are present together with the publisher's advertisements at the rear.
