Historical & Bibliographic Context

Part of the respected Popular County Histories series, this volume reflects the strong Edwardian appetite for accessible yet scholarly local history. At the turn of the twentieth century, there was renewed interest in parish records, antiquarian research, and county identity, particularly in historically rich regions such as Cambridgeshire.

Conybeare’s account combines ecclesiastical history, topography, political development, and architectural heritage, offering a compact yet authoritative survey of the county’s evolution from early settlement through the modern period.

The “Cheap Edition” made this scholarship more widely available, and surviving examples in original decorative cloth remain desirable to collectors of county histories and East Anglian material.

Note on Small Roughly Cut Flap Near Preface

The small roughly cut flap beside the preface is very likely a binder’s trimming irregularity or unopened edge remnant, rather than evidence of a removed leaf.

The sequence – Title page, blank verso, then Preface – is correct for Elliot Stock publications of this period. No bibliographic indication suggests a missing leaf at this point. The irregularity is consistent with Edwardian machine trimming and gathering.
