About the Work:
Set in Ireland, this novel follows Fred Neville, a young officer and heir to an English earldom, and his ill-fated love for Kate O’Hara, a woman of lower social standing. As Kate becomes pregnant, Fred is torn between duty and desire, loyalty and love. Trollope explores themes of class, social pressure, tradition, and moral obligation with characteristic depth and nuance.
A powerful, emotionally layered novel from one of the 19th century’s most prolific and acclaimed writers.
