About the Author
George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann (Marian) Evans (1819-1880), one of the greatest English novelists of the nineteenth century. Writing under a male pseudonym to be taken seriously in a male-dominated literary world, Eliot produced deeply intelligent, psychologically rich novels including Adam Bede, Middlemarch, and Silas Marner.
Her work is prized for its moral insight, realism, and compassion for ordinary lives, and she remains central to any serious literary collection.
