Historical & Bibliographic Context
Published during the height of the Second World War, The Exclusives offers a compelling glimpse into the social and psychological atmosphere of the pre-war years. Though written during wartime, the stories deliberately reflect the shifting moods and tensions of the preceding era, capturing a generation on the brink of global upheaval.
Wartime publications were often produced in limited numbers due to paper rationing, making first editions from this period particularly desirable to collectors. This volume is also notable as the debut collection of William Buchan, adding further bibliographic interest.
About the Author
William Buchan was a British author and son of John Buchan.
Binding & Exterior Description
The book is bound in original blue cloth with silver lettering to the spine and a small silver illustration to the front board. The binding remains intact and structurally sound, presenting well overall.
The original dust jacket is present and unclipped, retaining the publisher’s price on the inner flap. This is a significant survival feature for a wartime book. The jacket shows expected wear, including a large tear to the rear panel which has been neatly repaired internally with clear tape. Additional smaller edge tears, creasing, and light marks are present.
Despite these imperfections, the jacket remains complete and displays attractively.
Interior Condition
The pages are lightly tanned, as expected, but remain clean and well preserved overall. There is light foxing to the pastedowns and free endpapers, with only occasional light spotting or marks elsewhere, none of which affect readability.
A small amount of pen and pencil marking is present on the front free endpaper, with no further writing internally.
The pages are predominantly uncreased and free from tears. All pages are secure, though there are very light gutter cracks in a few places, including beside the title page.
