An important Edwardian photographic manual described by the publishers as “an entirely new work” for this extensively rewritten eighth edition.

The book includes a photographic frontispiece with its original tissue guard together with numerous photographic plates, diagrams, and illustrations throughout.

Historical & Bibliographic Context

First published in 1898, The Barnet Book of Photography became a widely respected practical guide for photographers during a period of rapid photographic development.

Published by Elliott & Sons, the work covers subjects including:

  • film photography
  • hand cameras
  • bromide printing
  • orthochromatic photography
  • lantern slides
  • pictorial photography

Contributors include A. Horsley Hinton, an important figure in British pictorial photography.

Binding & Exterior Description

Bound in red cloth with black lettering and decorative detailing to the front board and spine, together with the publisher’s trademark and original printed price of 1/6 to the rear board.

The binding remains intact and attractive overall with expected age-related wear including:

  • fading to the cloth, particularly the spine
  • small marks and stains
  • small splits near the head and tail of the spine
  • rubbing to the cloth and lettering
  • soft bumping to the corners

Overall, structurally sound.

Interior Condition

The front pastedown contains the decorative ownership panel:

“Barnet Book of Photography — This Book Belongs To — 1905”

This remains unfilled.

Pages are lightly tanned but generally neat and clean with only occasional marks or creases.

There is:

  • a small ink stamp for “Pain & Bayles, Cornhill, Ipswich” to the front free endpaper
  • manuscript corrections to pages 269 and 273

Several pages have small marginal tears not affecting text or illustrations.

The pages remain secure overall, though there are gutter cracks beside the front pastedown, frontispiece, and a handful of additional pages.

The photographic plate facing page 266 is partially loose at the upper inner margin but remains attached.

Importantly:

  • all pages are present
  • all photographic plates are present
  • the original tissue guard survives

Rarity & Collector Notes

This title is best described as scarce in complete condition.

Early photography manuals were heavily used working books, and many surviving copies lack plates, tissue guards, or retain weakened bindings.

This example remains desirable for:

  • complete photographic plates
  • surviving tissue guard for the frontispiece
  • pictorial photography interest
  • extensive Edwardian technical photography content
