1812 A Dictionary Of The English Language by Samuel Johnson Stereotype Edition Antiquarian Leather Hardback Book: In which the words are deduced from their originals, explained in their different meanings, and authorized by the names of the writers in whose works they are found. Abstracted from the Folio Edition. To which is prefixed, Dr. Johnson’s preface to the original Folio Edition, and his grammar of the English language.
Published by A. Wilson, Camden Town, St. Pancras, London. I believe that this was first published in 1755. It is among the most influential dictionaries in the history of the English language and the foremost one until the Oxford English Dictionary was published 173 years later. The thick leather boards are intact, but quite worn, with a little loss of the leather. They may have had a repair on the spine at some point, as it is bound in different leather. The boards, however, look original. Please bear in mind that this is of immense historical importance, being now over 210 years old. It is a substantial book, that would be a nice addition for a collector or an enthusiast. Please see the photographs provided for further details. The pages are very tanned and there is foxing and marks throughout. The title page is creased and there is some small creasing to the remaining pages. There are only minimal small rips to a few of the pages. There is no pen or pencil written inside this book. Between a few pages there is gutter has slightly cracked in the binding area and there is a larger crack in the gutter between pages 466 to 467. This is shown in the photograph that I have provided. Pages 467 to 478 are loose and page 71 (and overleaf) is partially loose, just at the bottom; however, no pages are missing. 32 pages of the preface are present at the start of the book, plus 732 pages of the dictionary text are present and then pages 33 to 35 of the preface are bound at the back of the book. Pages 105 to 108 of the dictionary text are out of order in the book, in that they come after page 112.
