Exterior Condition
- Attractive late-Victorian half-leather binding with gilt lettering on black spine panels and gilt tooling.
- Marbled boards are bright and decorative. Leather remains supple and robust.
- Light overall wear consistent with age: rubbing to corners and board edges, small surface marks and fading in places. Gilt remains clear.
Interior Condition
- Pages lightly tanned with light foxing on endpapers and occasional leaves; otherwise pages are clean and neat, and uncreased.
- A very small hole near the inner margin (gutter) on pages 211–216 of Bride of Lammermoor from the binding stitch (does not affect readable text).
- A very light crack in the gutter to the side of page 256 (Bride of Lammermoor), but gatherings remain secure.
- A couple of page edges are roughly cut, not affecting text.
- No loose signatures and no missing pages. All text and plate leaves present.
- Small binder’s sticker: “Bound by A. Brown & Sons, Savile Street, Hull.” No pen or pencil inscriptions.
Features & Collectibility
- Part of a matched late-Victorian Waverley Novels uniform series – desirable for collectors of Scott and decorative bindings.
- Editor Waddell’s notes and centenary apparatus add scholarly value. Rev. P. Hately Waddell’s scholarly annotations were used in Nimmo’s luxury editions before his death in 1891.
- Decorative attributes: gilt spine, marbled boards and edges, illustrated title pages and protected frontispieces.
