This is a charming and scarce war-time book, reissuing the Russian stories of Marshak, which are ‘The Ice-cream Man”, “The Silly Little Mouse”, and “The Circus”. Together, ‘The Ice-cream Man” and “The Circus” represent the start of a lifelong collaboration between poet Samuil Marshak and illustrator Vladimir Lebedev (born in 1891), where they brought together the vibrancy of Russain avant-garde art with the fantastic poetry. The original plates were in Russia, and could not be obtained, so the books were redrawn here onto plates by Brynhild Parker (who was a British artist and teacher, born in 1907), from copies of the original books.

IT IS IN ITS ORIGINAL PUBLISHER’S PICTORIAL PAPER BACKED BOARDS, TOGETHER WITH BLUE CLOTH ON THE SPINE. There is the same style of wonderful illustrations on the boards, as inside the book. THE COVER IS INTACT AND IN A GOOD CONDITION FOR OVER 80 YEARS OLD. However, is some wear to the cover, especially to the corners, the edges, and the top and bottom of the spine, small marks, creases, and small rips. Please see the photographs for more details.
Inside, there is tape on the inner edge of the pastedowns and the first and last pages. The text block has separated from the cover, and it appears that a repair has been attempted with tape. Despite this, the pages within the text block are all tightly bound together. The pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent of a book of this age. There is light foxing on the title page and the back free endpaper and remnants of coloured crayon on two of the pages, as shown in the photographs. There is no further pen or pencil written in this book. Besides this, the pages are in an overall neat and clean state, with only the occasional small mark and very occasional small fold. There are only rips to the inner side of the pastedowns and very small rips to the bottom edge of a few pages, which are minimal. They do not affect the text or the pictures. There is also a pinprick sized hole which runs through the pages and through the back board. This is small, but you can see it in the photographs provided.. There are NO MISSING PAGES. The pages are unpaginated and there are 36 pages present, including the endpapers.
PLEASE STUDY THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY AS TO THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK, AS THEY DO FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION.
