Historical & Bibliographic Context

Published immediately after the nationalisation of Britain's railways, The Railways of Britain appeared at a pivotal moment in British transport history. The creation of the British Transport Commission in 1948 transformed the railway network and generated widespread public interest in the origins and development of the nation's railways.

Rather than being solely a historical survey, Nock combines engineering history, social history and contemporary railway practice. The work traces the achievements of pioneers such as George Stephenson, Robert Stephenson, Thomas Telford, George Hudson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, while also examining locomotive development, signalling systems, railway operations and notable railway curiosities.

Today the volume remains highly regarded among railway historians and enthusiasts for its accessible yet authoritative overview of Britain's railway heritage during a period of profound change.

About the Author

Oswald Stevens Nock (1904–1994) was one of Britain's most respected railway writers and engineers. A prolific author, lecturer and railway historian, he produced dozens of influential works on locomotive engineering, railway operation and transport history. His books remain widely collected by railway enthusiasts and historians.

About the Illustrations

The book is extensively illustrated with photographs, historical views, colour plates and period engravings. Particularly notable are the colour reproductions of historic railway scenes and the charming in-text illustrations by the celebrated illustrator and humourist W. Heath Robinson, whose work adds additional appeal to collectors.

Binding & Exterior Condition

Original publisher's light orange cloth binding with scarlet lettering to the spine.

The book retains its original unclipped dust jacket, a highly desirable feature for collectors of post-war transport history. The jacket remains intact and displays the original published price.

Condition is very good for its age. Wear includes light foxing, light rubbing, occasional marks, small edge creases and several small edge tears to the dust jacket. The cloth binding beneath remains robust and attractive, showing only light rubbing to the extremities and a very small edge dent to the upper front board.

An attractive shelf copy with strong visual appeal.

Interior Condition

Pages are lightly toned with age and display light foxing and occasional light marks throughout.

There are remnants of pencil on the front free endpaper. The pages remain generally neat and well preserved, with only occasional small folds and the very occasional minor edge tear that does not affect text or illustrations.

A postcard depicting a steam locomotive has been retained within the volume and will be included with the book.

All plates are present as called for.

The text block remains secure, with only a very slight gutter opening between pages 56 and 57. This is minor and does not affect stability.

Overall, a clean and well-preserved example.
