Binding and Exterior Condition
This is the rare publisher’s deluxe full leather binding, issued only for this 1928 sixth edition.
Bound in deep blue full leather, with gilt titles and decorations to the spine and front board, and decorated endpapers.
The binding remains intact and robust, showing expected age-related wear including:
- Rubbing and small losses to the leather at head and tail of spine and corners
- Fading and light discolouration to spine and board edges
- Partial splits to the leather along the spine joints
Despite these, the gilt remains bright and the structure sound, a very presentable and rare survival of this luxury edition.
Interior Condition
- Decorated endpapers and pastedowns by E. H. Shepard.
- Pages are bright for age, lightly tanned, clean, and mostly uncreased.
- Very occasional light mark or tiny crease, not obscuring text or illustrations.
- No pen or pencil inscriptions.
- Binding: Slight crack at the front pastedown joint and a few minor inner binding cracks elsewhere, but no loose pages.
- Complete: All 159 pages present.
- Small previous bookseller’s label to rear pastedown.
Illustrations
Features the iconic drawings by E. H. Shepard, beloved for their gentle humour and timeless charm, depicting Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh in classic scenes that defined a century of children’s literature.
Historical and Collectible Context
Originally published in 1926, Winnie-the-Pooh became an immediate success and cultural phenomenon. Methuen issued a small number of deluxe leather-bound editions in subsequent printings (such as this 1928 issue), intended as presentation or gift copies.
These deluxe bindings are seldom encountered today, particularly when still in their original publisher’s leather, rather than later fine bindings.
They represent one of the earliest luxury editions of Milne’s beloved work.
