1898 Isle of Wight Travel Guide John Murray Handbook 5th Ed w/ Map Ex-Library

A Handbook for Travellers in the Isle of Wight

With an Introductory Sketch of the History of the Island by R. E. Prothero
Edited by the Rev. G. E. Jeans, Vicar of Shorwell and Rector of Mottiston
Fifth Edition – With Map
Published 1898 · John Murray, Albemarle Street, London

Description

A beautifully compact and highly practical Victorian travel guide to the Isle of Wight, issued by the prestigious publisher John Murray, whose Handbooks for Travellers were the gold standard for 19th-century tourism. This fifth edition reflects the island’s status as one of Britain’s most fashionable holiday destinations during the late Victorian period.

The volume combines history, geography, transport, accommodation, and local colour, alongside a folding map housed neatly at the rear. Particularly appealing is the inclusion of “Murray’s Handbook Advertiser 1898–1899”, offering a fascinating snapshot of railways, steamboats, hotels, and travel infrastructure of the era.

A wonderful example of Victorian travel literature, part guidebook, part social document.

Historical & Bibliographic Context

John Murray’s Handbooks for Travellers shaped how Victorians experienced Britain and Europe. The Isle of Wight, long favoured by Queen Victoria and the upper middle classes, was promoted as both picturesque and healthful.

R. E. Prothero’s historical sketch situates the island within England’s political and maritime history, while Rev. G. E. Jeans contributes local ecclesiastical and topographical insight from his roles in Shorwell and Mottiston.

This edition captures the Isle of Wight at the height of its late-Victorian popularity — before the First World War transformed both travel and society.

Provenance & Library History

This copy is an ex-library volume from the Richmond Public Library (Surrey) and carries a rich documentary trail:

• Richmond Public Library Reference Department plate
• Ink stamp noting withdrawal from the library
• Presentation plate reading:
“BOROUGH OF RICHMOND (SURREY). PUBLIC LIBRARY PRESENTED BY
T. J. Garstang, Esq. – 11 February 1943”
• Further library ink stamps at the introduction, page 70, and on the back of the folding map

These institutional marks add a second layer of social history, tracing the book’s life from Victorian traveller’s companion to 20th-century municipal reference copy. A tangible link to public education, wartime Britain, and civic philanthropy.
