"Everybody's Pepys: The Diary of Samuel Pepys 1660-1669" is a book that contains a selection of entries from the famous diary of Samuel Pepys, an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who lived in the 17th century. Samuel Pepys was born in 1633 in London. The diary is known for providing a vivid and compelling account of life in London during a time of great change, including the Great Plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of 1666. One of the unique features of Pepys' diary is the honesty with which he writes about his own life, including his personal failings and weaknesses. This candour has made the diary a valuable historical document and a fascinating read for generations of readers.
The book was first published in 1926, and this is a beautiful and neat copy, with a handsome leather and cloth binding, marble patterned pastedowns and free endpapers and top-edge gilt pages.
The illustrator, Ernest H. Shepard, is best known for his beautiful illustrations of the characters in Winnie The Pooh, which was also first published in 1926.
The cover is half leather and cloth bound. It has a leather spine, with leather corners and leather board inner edges and green cloth bound boards. The stunning spine is panelled, with gilt decoration and titles. There are also intricate gilt borders to the edges of the cloth, where it adjoins to the leather.
The cover is intact, robust and in a good condition for a book that is nearly 100 old. The cover does, however, have patches of wear, especially to the edges and corners, small marks, and light scratches. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference.
Inside, the pages are lightly tanned and in an overall neat and clean state, with just some marks on some of the pastedowns are free endpapers. The pages are in an overall uncreased state and there are only very small rips to the bottom corners of pages 497 to 514. Please see the photograph provided of page 504 for an example of this. There are no further rips to the pages. There are no pen or pencil marks written inside this book. The pages are all secure and there is just an extremely light cracks in the gutter between the pastedowns and endpapers. These are barely noticeable. There are no missing pages and so all 570 pages are present.
Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.
This measures approximately 19.2 cm by 13.6 cm and 4.2 cm wide. It weighs approximately 867 grams.
