Description:
A handsome Victorian literary anthology from the renowned Macmillan's Magazine, this is Volume LVI, covering the months May through October 1887. Quarter bound in elegant calf leather over marbled paper boards, the spine features decorative gilt tooling and a red title compartment. The all-edge marbling and endpapers are beautifully preserved, offering a striking complement to the binding.

Founded in 1859 by Alexander Macmillan, Macmillan's Magazine was an influential cultural and literary periodical throughout the Victorian era. It sought to showcase both emerging and established literary voices and intellectuals, publishing fiction, essays, poetry, criticism, and commentary on pressing social and scientific issues. Notable contributors to this volume include Matthew Arnold, George Meredith, A. H. Paterson, and Sir Francis Doyle, among others.

The 1887 volume features a broad cross-section of Victorian thought and creativity, offering deep insight into contemporary discourse across genres and remains a valuable cultural artefact.

Please note: As typical for publications of this era and binding style, this 1887 volume did not originally come with a dust jacket.

Condition:
The cover is intact, robust, and in good condition for its age. There is some general edge wear to the boards, including light scratches, a few marks, and a small area of bubbling to the front board marbled paper. Internally, the pages are bright for their age, with some foxing to the endpapers and pastedowns. Text block remains tight and secure with no loose pages and no missing content. There are a few very small edge tears not affecting the text, light creasing to some page corners, and a couple of faint marks. A handwritten pen inscription appears on the front free endpaper. No other pen or pencil marks are present. All 480 pages are complete and legible.
