1871 3rd Edition – THE ART OF GARNISHING CHURCHES AT CHRISTMAS AND OTHER FESTIVALS By Edward Young Cox.

ILLUSTRATED Antiquarian Hardback Book. With ILLUSTRATIONS FROM ORIGINAL DESIGNS AND ANCIENT EXAMPLES, including a FRONTISPIECE. This contains 38 PLATES. In both COLOUR AND BLACK AND WHITE. The third edition contains a larger number of new designs, from the pencil of Mr S. J. Nicholl. These are ALL PRESENT and accounted for. Please note the plates are numbered up to 40, but there are no plates 19 and 20. They were deliberately omitted from this edition, and their descriptions have also been omitted from the text (see the photograph of page 54), as they were not needed.

With vi., 63pp, 38 plates, index of illustrations, and publisher’s catalogue at the rear.

BOUND IN ITS ORIGINAL RED, GILT CLOTH, OVER BOARDS. There are gilt and black decorations and gilt titles on the front board and embossed decorations on the back board. There are BROWN PASTEDOWNS AND ENDPAPERS, and ALL EDGE RED PAGES.

BESIDES THE OCCASIONAL LIGHT FOXING, THE PAGES ARE OVERALL NEAT FOR THEIR AGE AND PREDOMINANTLY UNCREASED, WITHOUT PEN OR PENCIL MARKS OR RIPS. PLEASE SEE THE DETAILS BELOW IN THE DESCRIPTION.

Published in 1871 by Cox & Sons, Ecclesiastical Warehouse, 28 & 29 Southampton Street, Strand, London. It is a third edition, and the first edition was published a few years earlier, in 1868.

This does not include a dust jacket.

THE COVER IS INTACT AND ROBUST. There is some wear, but this is expected from a book which is Over 150 Years Old. This includes bumping and small rips to the corners, small rips on the spine, creasing and bubbling on the front board, several marks, discolouration on the spine, and rubbing at the edges. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference.

Inside, the pages are lightly tanned, which is consistent for a book of this age. There are darker patches of tanning on a few pages, but this does not obscure the text. THE PAGES ARE IN AN OVERALL NEAT AND ARE PREDOMINANTLY UNCREASED, with just a small crease on a few pages. As afore mentioned, there is the occasional light foxing, mostly very light. There are NO RIPS TO THE PAGES and there is NO PEN OR PENCIL written inside this book. THE PAGES ARE ALL SECURE, and although there are light cracks in the gutter between the pastedowns and endpapers, the rest of the pages are tightly bound. There are NO MISSING PAGES.

PLEASE STUDY THE PHOTOS CAREFULLY AS TO THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK, AS THEY DO FORM PART OF THE DESCRIPTION.

This measures approximately 21.1 cm by 14 cm and 1.4 cm wide. It weighs approximately 327 grams.

Thank you so much for looking.
