History Of The Reformation D'Aubigné 1846 RARE EMERALD ED 4 VOLS COMPLETE Book

History Of The Reformation In The Sixteenth Century BY J. H. Merle D'Aubigné Hardback Antiquarian Book 1846 – Emerald Edition, Four Volumes Complete - from the third French edition.

This is a very scarce edition of this book. Published by Blackie & Son, Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. Printed by W.G. Blackie And Co., Printers, Edinburgh.

All 341 pages of volume 1 and 2 are present (plus contents) and 410 pages of volume 3 and 4 are present. There are also a few pages of book advertisements at the back of the book.

The 4 volumes in this book are divided as follows: Volume I French Edition contained in volume I up to page 173, Volume II French Edition contained in volume I from pages 175 to 341. Volume III French Edition contained in volume II pages 1 to 213, Volume IV Original Edition contained in volume II pages 215 to 410. There is a statement within the book, which states “Messrs. Blackie & Son have the pleasure of offering to their numerous Subscribers the Fourth Volume of their EMERALD EDITION of D'Aubigné’s History of the Reformation. They are enabled to do this by an arrangement entered into with Messrs Oliver & Boyd, the proprietors of the original manuscript, and whose English edition this volume is a reprint. In order to obtain the privilege of publishing the fourth volume, Messrs. Blackie & Son have aid Messrs. Oliver & Boyd a very large sum of money; a sum indeed that will absorb the entire profits arising from the sale of this volume. The Publishers, however, have made this sacrifice to enable them to complete the copies of their edition in the hands of their subscribers, and this to implement their engagements to them at the very earliest period. Glasgow, 25th August, 1846”.

This book is in a good condition for a book that is nearly 180 years old. The dark green/olive cloth bound cover is intact and good for its age. There are wonderful embossed decorations over the cover, on the back, front and spine and there are gilt titles on the spine. As well as general wear to the cover, especially to the edges, there is heavier wear to the cloth on the bottom side of the front board. There are also patches of fading, crushed corners, some creasing and small rips in the cloth on the spine.

Inside, there are yellow pastedowns and endpapers. The pages are tanned, but they are in an overall neat state for their age. There are only small stains on the preliminary pages and the occasional small mark to the rest of the pages, but otherwise in a clean condition. There is only occasional creasing to the pages, with the majority of the pages being uncreased. Some of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. This has left the occasional small rip to the page edges. There is also a small rip in the front pastedown and a very small hole in the edge of page 127 (and overleaf). Please see the photographs provided for further reference. On the front pastedown an Ex Libris-sticker has been pasted and there is some pencil on the front free endpaper. There is no further pen or pencil inside this book. The binding is secure and there are no loose pages. The last page is partially pasted to the back pastedown.

Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.

This measures approximately 19.2 cm by 12.7 cm and 5.6 cm wide. It weighs approximately 716 grams.
