Historical & Bibliographic Context

Harald Cramér’s Mathematical Methods of Statistics is one of the foundational texts of modern statistical theory. First published during the mid-20th century, it was the first major treatise to treat statistics with the full rigor of modern mathematics, uniting probability theory with statistical inference in a systematic and enduring way.

For decades, this book shaped the teaching and research of mathematical statistics worldwide. It remains a landmark work for anyone studying probability distributions, random variables, estimation theory, and hypothesis testing.

About the Author

Harald Cramér (1893–1985) was a Swedish mathematician and statistician who played a central role in establishing statistics as a mathematically rigorous discipline. He served as Professor of Actuarial Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at the University of Stockholm (1929–1958), later becoming President of the University and then Chancellor of the entire Swedish university system.

Cramér’s name is permanently associated with major results in probability theory, including Cramér’s Theorem in large deviations theory.

Rarity & Collector Notes

While not rare in the strict antiquarian sense, Mathematical Methods of Statistics is highly desirable in original cloth with its dust jacket, particularly in later clean printings such as this 1974 Thirteenth Printing. Copies in jacket with solid condition remain sought after by collectors, statisticians, and academic libraries.
