Historical & Bibliographic Context

County directories such as this were among the most important reference tools of the Victorian period, providing detailed information on towns, parishes, landowners, trades, institutions, and infrastructure.

Published by Kelly & Co. Limited, one of the foremost directory publishers of the 19th century, this volume captures Lincolnshire at a pivotal moment following the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, reflecting new parliamentary divisions and administrative structures.

Directories of this scale are now valued not only as reference works but as primary historical sources, widely used by genealogists, local historians, and collectors of regional material.

Binding & Exterior Description

Bound in original red cloth with blind stamped decorative borders to the boards and gilt lettering to the spine.

The binding remains intact and robust, retaining strong structural integrity. There is expected age-related wear, including fading to the spine, rubbing and bumping to the corners, small splits at the head and tail of the spine, and scattered marks and stains to the cloth.

Interior Condition

Internally, the book remains in good usable condition for a working directory of this size.

Pages are generally clean and legible, with occasional light foxing, small marks, and minor ink marks. There are no ownership inscriptions. The pages are largely uncreased.

A small tear near the inner margin of page 16 is present but does not obscure the text, and the very occasional very small edge rip, not affecting the text. The title page through to page iii are partially loose at the inner margin but remain attached. There are a handful of gutter cracks across sections of the book, though all pages remain secure.
