About the Author
Samuel Orchart Beeton (1831–1877) was a pioneering Victorian publisher, editor, and author best known for producing practical reference works aimed at the expanding literate middle classes. He was the husband of Isabella Beeton, author of Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management, and played an important role in the development of affordable illustrated educational publishing.
 
Binding & Exterior
The book is presented in the publisher's original red cloth binding.
The front board features ornate black lettering and decorative elements, while the spine has gilt lettering together with a decorative floral illustration, reflecting the attractive presentation typical of late Victorian reference works.
The binding remains intact and structurally sound, although it shows evidence of age and use. This includes bumping and wear to corners, rubbing to edges, fading and marks to the cloth, staining and general discolouration,  small tears at the head and tail of the spine, a few pinprick-sized holes to the front board, and a small hole to the spine. 
The decorative binding remains an important feature of the book despite these signs of handling.
 
Interior Condition
The text block is complete, with all 576 pages present, together with publisher's advertisements to the pastedowns and endpapers.
The paper is lightly toned consistent with age. There are occasional small marks throughout, generally not affecting readability or illustrations.
A small number of defects are noted:
marks affecting pages 368 and 369 through the text area, photographed within the listing, 
occasional small folds or light creases, 
a few minor edge tears which do not affect text or illustrations. 
Ownership and handling marks include:
a small amount of pen writing on the front endpaper, 
pencil mark on the front pastedown, 
a pencil ownership signature for "G. Ayres" on the half-title page, 
pencil mark on page 576. 
The binding remains secure. There are only minimal and occasional light gutter cracks between a small number of pages, with no impact on structural integrity.
