1780: THE PARLIAMENTARY REGISTER J. Almon Vol.XV (1779/80) Antiquarian Book

1780 – THE PARLIAMENTARY REGISTER Vol XV (1779-1780) – RARE Antiquarian Book; Also known as “HISTORY OF THE PROCEEDINGS AND DEBATES OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS”; Containing an Account of The Most Interesting Speeches, Motions, Protests, Petitions, &C. During The Sixth Session of The Fourteenth Parliament of Great Britain: Begun To Be Holden At Westminster On The 29th Day Of November, 1774, And Dissolved On The First Day Of September, 1780.

This is VOL. XV. Published in 1780 by J. Almon, Opposite Burlington-House, in Picadilly, London.

This is an intriguing read and a historically valuable book, in particular it details the treatment of the Lords by the rioters who were gathering to the amount of “several thousand”, outside the Old Palace-Yard (near the House of Lords) during session.

This book contains discussions of the House of Lords in Westminster, London and include the following:

  • ADDRESS, debate on,
  • debate on the riots,
  • Affairs of Ireland,
  • Lord Amherst, debate on his letters,
  • Contractors bill,
  • Carmarthen, Marguis of, removed,
  • Committee on the public expenses,
  • Debate on the state of Jamaica,
  • Debate on French and Spanish memorials,
  • Malt tax,
  • Militia bill,
  • Motion for a list of places held by Peers,
  • Pembroke, Earl of, removed,
  • Debate on the state of Plymouth,
  • Protests,
  • Debate on the Public expenses,
  • Debates on the Roman Catholic bill,
  • Riots and tumults,
  • Thanks to Rodney, Sir George,
  • ….., his letter, debate on,
  • Richmond, Duke of, debate on his intended bill,
  • Russian officer, debate on being released,
  • Speech, King's, on the riots,
  • End of Parliament.

It is an overall neat and clean copy of this book for its age, being over 240 years old, although please note that the boards are fragile, although still intact.

This is quarter bound, with thick calf leather on the spine and board inner edges, and marbled paper on the boards. The spine is panelled, with gilt lettering.  The cover is intact, but fragile and the boards are only just attached. However, this is consistent with a book of this age. The wear to the cover includes significant fading, rubbing, rips (more-so at the edges), and some marks and stains. Please see the photographs which I have provided for further reference.

Inside, this is in a good state for its age. The pages are lightly tanned, with darker patches of tanning on the endpapers, pastedowns, and title page and some marks on page 226 (see photo provided). Besides this, the pages are in an overall very neat and clean condition for their age. There is just the very occasional very small marks and light creasing on the pages. Many of the edges of the pages are uneven and roughly cut, but this is highly likely due to the construction of this book and is all part of its beautiful history. The page leaves were probably uncut and then severed with a pen knife. This has left the very occasional small rip at the page edges, which do not affect the text.  In addition, several further pages have very small holes near their edges but, again, this does not affect the text. There is no pen or pencil written inside this book. There are cracks in the gutter between the pastedowns and endpapers, and these are just held together by the threading. However, the main text block is tightly bound and secure. There are no missing pages and so all 389 pages are present. However, please note that there appears to be a printing error to some of the page numbers, which are out of sequence at the top. The text itself seems to flow in the correct sequence and so it appears that the page numbers themselves are just misprinted.

Please study the photos carefully as to the condition of this book, as they do form part of the description.

This measures approximately 23 cm by 24.5 cm and 3 cm wide. It weighs approximately 555 grams.
