1855 - The Illustrated Byron

A richly illustrated 170-year-old edition of Lord Byron’s works, showcasing the artistry of five renowned 19th-century illustrators. Bound in cloth with elaborate gilt spine detailing and all edges gilt.

 

Although this book does not bear a publication date on the title page, a printed date is visible within the binding margin between a couple of pages, where it is clearly marked as published in 1855. (Please refer to the accompanying photograph for visual confirmation.)

 

Illustrators Include:

  • Kenny Meadows (1790–1874) - Known for his theatrical and expressive illustrations, particularly for The Illustrated Shakespeare and Dickens' Pickwick Papers and Oliver Twist. His style brought drama and depth to literary scenes.

  • Birket Foster (1825–1899) - Acclaimed for his idyllic depictions of the English countryside. His work appears in books by Dickens and Thackeray and was celebrated for its warmth and charm.

  • Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz) (1815–1882) - Dickens’ most prolific illustrator, contributing iconic images to David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Nicholas Nickleby. His visual interpretations are inseparable from Dickens' storytelling.

  • Gustave Janet (1829–?) - A French lithographer and draughtsman who worked on the Illustrated Times and Illustrated London News, known for detailed and atmospheric engravings.

  • Edward Morin (c.1824–1882) - French painter and illustrator, whose elegant style added grace and realism to literary scenes.

Condition:
Exterior:

  • Cloth boards are sturdy with light wear and some marks (particularly to rear board)

  • Gilt spine remains attractive and legible

  • Slight lean to the spine

Interior:

  • Pages are tanned consistent with age, but overall clean

  • Light scattered marks, small folds or creases throughout

  • Several pages show tears, some affecting text and images (visible in photos)

  • A few pages are partially loosened but remain attached; binding mostly secure

  • Pencil remnants on some pages

  • All 632 pages are complete and intact

  • Printer’s error: Page 415 misnumbered as 405
